Start your blog in 30 min

I want to start this series about making money online with blogging. I have done several blogs in the past years. So have some experience in it and know what I’m talking about. In my opinion this is still a reliable way to make money.

Not only is blogging a great hobby, but with a blog, you can express yourself in an unique way, help others with problems you’ve overcome, set up yourself as a specialist, and perhaps make some money.

However, starting the proper way in your blogging career can mean the difference between a blog with a growing, devoted readership…… or worse, one more addition to the internet graveyard.

If you’re new to blogging, it really helps to have someone to point you in the right direction and help you avoid fatal faults.

This tutorial was put together to help you create your first blog within 30 min from now. Everything has been prepared for you to make it as easy as possible.

But all that is useless until…take action and start  right now!

Many new bloggers tent to make the same mistakes and eventually give up altogether.

OK then , let’s do the first step:

1. Pick a blogging platform

There really are a lot to choose from. You can create a site with many blogging platforms, such as WordPress, Tumblr,
Blogger and much more…

But since there are over 72 million active users utilizing WordPress now  it is clear which platform is the boss.

All of my own blogs and sites are constructed using the WordPress blogging platform.

Here’s why:

 

It’s FREE for everyone to use (like themes, designs, and add-ons that many other blogging platforms do not provide). So it’ the perfect way to start without investing anything!

It’s super simple for you to set up on your own. I will show you precisely how easy it is in just a little bit…

It’s safe.  WordPress is constantly updating their software and maintaining everything secure and sound, so there’s no need to worry of having your blog come under hacking attacks. That is why even NASA, Time Magazine, and top universities blogs are using WordPress.

It’s highly flexible to your immediate needs as starter and future growths as blog expert. There are hundreds of free plugins and themes which add more functionality to your blog, from touch and join boxes to plugins which improve blog performance and more.

While many other blogging platforms are usually all fairly okay; nothing, in my opinion, has ever come close to matching the freedom and flexibility that WordPress offers.

Why using a free blogging site is not a good idea.

Without a doubt, you need to self-host your WordPress blog. This usually means you are in full charge of your own site and articles. You own the site and not someone else.

Think about. What blogger will you trust more?
“www.mygreatblog.freeblogsite.com” or

“www.mygreatblog.com”

But that’s not all- free blogging programs will cause you more problems on the way.

  • You don’t control your own articles –the free blogging platform does. They can shut down you anytime, and for any reason.
  • The internet address of your blog will probably be long and difficult to recall (like www.myhonestreviewblog.freeblogsite.com) instead of a catchy, branded address you select.
  • You’re not allowed to advertise on most free blogging platforms, which makes it much more difficult to ever make money from.
You can avoid all these headaches by starting right away with your own hosted WordPress blog.

Now that we’ve gone through the fundamentals of blogging platforms, so it is time to start  your blog!

2. Register a great domain name and hosting.

If you don’t have a hosting or a domain name yet – don’t worry. You will have one in a minute – following the steps below.

At the end of this step (2), you will have a fully working self-hosted WordPress blog on your own domain name!

If for some odd reason you don’t want to use Bluehost, you can always choose another hosting platform. I can’t promise they’ll be that good, but the registration and the setup process should be similar.

Some hosting platforms do not have one-click install for WordPress. You can install wordpress manually but I don’t recommend that for beginners.

  1. Sign Up for BlueHost

IMPORTANT: The site might look a little different, but the steps are exactly the same. Just push whatever “Get Started” button they’re currently running.

Choose the “basic” plan (and save some $$$)

The Basic option is perfect for beginners, and you can always upgrade later when you’re ready.

3. Decide on a domain name.

A domain name is just the address people can find your blog at, like “www.myawesoemblog.com”

I recommend you get the .com if you can, as it’s easiest for most people to remember, but if you can’t it’s also ok to get an ending like .net or .co if your first choice isn’t available.

TIP: Can’t come up with a great name? Try using Instant Domain Search or NameStation! You can simply enter a keyword or topic and get dozens of ideas for available domain names.

And if you’re absolutely can’t come up with a name, just click “Choose later” along the bottom of the screen above. You can always add your free domain name later.

If you already have a domain name, fill out the form on the right. You won’t break anything, even if you’re already running a live site.

Once you’ve added your domain, click “next.”

Complete your registration

There are three easy parts to this step. First, add your account info using a real email address (because you’ll need it to log in!)

Choose your package and optional extras

Next, select the options you want for your account. Your first choice you have is the “Account Plan” – 12, 24, or 36 months.

I recommend to start just with 12 month for now.

You would probably potentially save money by purchasing 3 years upfront. But for 12 months, the price is still pretty reasonable and you’re not really out any extra cash if you decide running a blog isn’t for you personally after a year.

Finally, you can choose whether to include in extra features. Many extras are a waste of money for beginners, with two exceptions:

1 . Domain Privacy — $0. 99/mo (I think it’s a must-have)

The moment you buy a domain, your contact details are put into a public database for legal reasons. Investing in personal privacy means Bluehost’s information is listed instead. That keeps you free from being spammed with a huge selection of calls via telemarketers. So I suggest this option. But if you don’t bother you can leave it out.

2. CodeGuard Basic – $2.99/mo (optional)

Losing all your content after all the work you put in to a hack or glitch would be a nightmare, right? CodeGuard Basic ensures your site is regularly and securely backed up, which is great for peace of mind. But you can always add this one later on.

IMPORTANT: If you don’t want any of the optional features, make sure you unchecked the boxes before moving on! It’s very easy to miss.

Enter billing details

Enter your credit card details, and you’ll good to go!
You can also pay with PayPal if you select “more payment options” at the top above the fields.

Now it’s time to set a password and log in

You should now see something like the screen below. Click the green “Create your password” button.

Then, set up a password, click “I have read and agreed to Bluehost’s Privacy Policy and Terms of Service” and click “Next”…

Than you should see the screen below. …not too difficult, right?

You also will get an email from Bluehost with your login information, and possibly also an activation link. If you can’t find it, verify your spam folder. But It’s good to save that email so you can have a look at your login details later.

4. Set up WordPress (the easy way)

You are almost good to go already. The next step is now to install WordPress. Since you choose bluehost.com this is very simple.

The first screen invites you to pick a theme you like.  But I recommend you skip this step by clicking the link below the pictures.  

There is a better option as I will show you later. But if you DO chose a theme now, you can always change it later anytime.

On the next screen, click the “Start Building” button. If you accidentally click the “Or, go to my Bluehost account” link, just push the back button.

If you just purchased a new domain name it may be that your blog will show up on a temporary domain name. This is OK as it takes a while until your purchased domain name becomes available.  Bluehost will automatically change the domain as soon as it’s available.

Now should now see a screen that looks like this:

 

Welcome to your new WordPress dashboard! You have successfully installed WordPress.

On the left side bar, you’ll see a few menu items. Here is short overview, but don’t click on any of them for now.

  • Posts: Here are all your posts. You can write new and also view old ones.
  • Media: Here you can upload pictures or other media files.
  • Pages: Here you can add pages to your site (not blogs!)
  • Comments: Here you can manage comments others leave for you.
  • Appearance: Here you can choose and edit a theme template.
  • Users: Here you can add other users than can access your blog.
  • Plugins: Here you can add new features to your blog.

But for now none of these options are important.

As you see on your page you have the option to choose now either a business or a personal page.

 

Actually it’s doesn’t matter what you choose since you can always change it later without any problem. So just choose what fits best to you.

After you made your choice you see something like this:

  • “Site Title” This defines the title of your new blog site.
  • “Site Description” Here you can give a SHORT description of what your blog is all about.

As always – this can be easily changed anytime in case you change your mind.

Now on the next screen you are asked if you want to update your new site with new posts. Just click “Yes.”

 

After that you need to choose what visitors on your site see first. Either most recent blogs on the top or a more static page.

I recommend choosing the first option.

Next, you can set up a “Contact Us” page if you’d like people to be able to send you a message through your site. This one’s up to you!

Finally, you’ve got the option to connect your “Jetpack” profile to WordPress to improve security, grow traffic, and track your site’s stats. Jetpack is completely free – so I do recommend going through this quick process if you have a moment.

BUT!

You can always do this later, so simply click “Not now” if you’re not in the mood.

Quick tip: If you signed up with a new domain name, make sure you check your email from Bluehost for an activation link inside the message. Click it to complete the activation process and bring your new blog to the world.

5. Choose and customize your design

Finally, the most fun part: it’s time to choose a design you are really excited about. In WordPress, they simply refer to designs as “Themes” – don’t let the language throw you.

The good news: You have over 5,000 FREE options to choose from!

The bad news: With so many options, you can spend HOURS going down the design rabbit hole.

I’ve put together a list of 30+ of the best free WordPress Themes if you want some ideas (though some are better for blogs than others!)

But, let’s get to the installation part. To access the Themes, click the “Appearance” tab, and you’ll see a screen like this:

 

Simply click “Add New Theme” to get started Here’s a quick video that shows you what to do next to find and install a great free theme for your blog – or change the theme you already have.

Found a theme you like? Then it’s time to do a little more customization.

You don’t need to do all that right now (I’m about to show you how to write your first post), but I recommend you bookmark Karol’s guide for later.

It’ll be INVALUABLE in saving you some time and keeping things simple later on.

6. Start writing!

The good news is that if you can use Microsoft Word, Pages, or Gmail, writing a blog post in WordPress is just as easy. Let’s walk through some of the important features you should know!

To start writing a post, just click “Posts” in the side-bar, then click “Add New.”
If you’ve logged out of WordPress, type in 
http://your_domain.com/wp-admin/ to log back in!

What you’ll see is a very friendly editor screen that should remind you of MS Word or Pages on Mac:

 

Let’s break down what you’re seeing here:

1. Title Area: This is where you write the title of your post.

2. Content Area: This is where the body text of your post goes. The whole area works just like text editing in Word or Pages.

3. Standard Editing Tools: Here are options like bold, italic, lists, paragraphs, and headlines.

In a moment, I’ll show you how to use this section to add links, images, and more to your post.

At the very end of the Standard Editing Tools is the “Toolbar Toggle” that looks like this:

 

Click this to add even more options to your Toolbar, such as Undo/Redo buttons, text color formatting, indentation, and more.

7. Keep On Blogging!

This of course is only the technical set-up to start your blog. But now you have all the tools you need to start your own blog.

But all the work is useless until you actually start to write posts. So don’t give up and work on your blog daily. Add value to your blog so other are inclined to follow you and you can grow your blog.
